Artist Statement
- Raised in Bengal, India, Amita Bhatt has been living in the USA since 1994. In this body of work, she borrows from traditional Buddhist and Hindu Tantric imagery and fuses it with Western philosophy to create a new visual language. While exploring the classic themes of desire, conflict, struggle and transcendence, Bhatt allows herself, often with some trepidation, to enter complex worlds of ancient philosophies while negotiating the present, as she examines man's struggle for power and domination on individuals, communities and on geographic fronts.
